Other Characters: Zevran Arainai
Interests: Adele's recently been through the wringer with what happened at the White Spire in Dragon Age Asunder and I'd like to get her to process it and face her distrust of the Chantry and Templars, as well as step forward to protect the interest of her fellow rebel mages in a nonviolent manner. Playing shepard to a group of mages and apprentices that wish to joing the Inquisition will take up most of her time, as will patching up people too dumb to keep from getting hurt.

Race: Human
Nationality: Orlesian
Occupation: Spirit Healer / Surgeon
Age: 36
History
- Born in 9:06 Dragon to a noble Orlesian family, youngest of six sisters. Brought up to be perfect and poised but struggles with it. She dreams of spirits that watch over her and urge her to be kind to those less fortunate but doesn't have an opportunity to do so, or a chance to really understand what's being asked. Balancing that with the strategic upbringing at such a young age is difficult for her.
- Manifested her magic at the age of 8 by freezing a fancy fountain while distressed at one of her mother's parties. There'd been an argument with one of her sisters about giving food to one of their servants and the rest found them to join in. She became angry and froze the fountain. At this point she was glad to go to the circle and not have to deal with the stress of being noble as she wasn't good at it. She is sent to the Circle of Magi at the White Spire.
- Focuses her studies on the creation healing magic and anatomy, using books from Nevarran necromancers to better understand how to be more efficient in healing.
- Undergoes her harrowing at the age of 17, passes with minimal difficulty due to experience with spirits.
- Becomes an Enchanter at 25, starts tutoring mages and apprentices in spirit and healing magics.
- Is sent on the odd service journey to heal people in need at the behest of the Chantry, usually with a templar and guide in tow.
- After the burning of the Circle of Magi in Starkhaven and the explosion in Kirkwall, tensions rise in the White Spire, Adele focuses on her studies, urges her fellow mages to remain calm and wait it out.
- Doubles down on her spirit healing specialty, takes up surgical techniques to be more effective.
- Murders begin in the White Spire, Adele keeps her head down, keeps studying with the other mages. When one of them goes missing she does what she can to keep her students calm but it's difficult with increasing hostilities from the templars.
- News of a way to reverse the rite of Tranquility gets Adele curious and changes the course of her research.
- Fights her way out during the massacre at the White Spire, herding younger mages and apprentices out before templars can find and kill them. Without anywhere else to go she steers them to Andoral's Reach, spending her time there with training the refugee mages as best she can with her limited experience and healing all that join them.
- Upon word of the formation of the Inquisition, Adele travels there in hopes of finding protection for the mages at Andoral's Reach, accompanying volunteer mages that wish to join, and preventing another massacre in a time of war.
Personality
Adele is pragmatic, proud, and paranoid at first glance; a reaction to the massacre at the White Spire. Templars and the Chantry are both sore points with her and she treats both with wary suspicion if not outright hostility. What faith she had for the system, the place of either organization in the world of mages has been shattered completely. Likewise her frustrations with her fellow mages that take the more violent route before diplomacy leads her to lead an almost solitary life beyond lending her skills to those in need or advocating for a peaceful resolution.
When she has her composure she can come off as stoic or even apathetic depending upon the situation. She attempts to react as little as possible in order to focus more on what needs to be done rather than feelings hurt by curt words. When she loses her composure the full of her temper shows. Under all this there is a compassionate, playful woman who had her faith shaken. The betrayal of the system she adhered to her whole life has left her wary and frustrated, covering her hurt with anger is easier than extending that trust again. Glimmers of who she used to be slip out occasionally, but its rare, often when she's teaching or tending to the mages and apprentices that she's claimed as her responsibility. The system failed them, she cannot.
Most gentleness she once had in treating her patients is stamped out by practicality. If she bleeds for each patient she'll have no blood left for anyone else. She doesn't gentle her speech if someone is acting dense, has little patience for fools and less for those that do. If she is treating a child Adele is patient and forgiving of their fear and foolishness. Despite her harsh demeanor Adele does care for people- she simply does not trust them. No matter why a patient is in her tent she treats them to the best of her ability. She may curse their idiocy with every poultice and spell but she will fix them. She does her job, she does it well, and if things become more difficult it only makes her all the more certain that it is worth being done.
When not healing or teaching she is somber but more lax with her speech, slightly less formal and more sarcastic. She prefers soft, cutting remarks rather than witty repartee unless she's speaking with someone she trusts or cares about, which are few. She does have a sense of humor; it's a dry, morbid one. It's not recommended to ever ask 'what's the worst that can happen' around her, Adele will list every probable option. In great detail.
Adele, above all else, needs to feel in control of herself. Any loss of composure is a failure as she holds herself to a high standard as a role model. She must be perfect for her students, no matter how stressful it may make life for her.
Strengths & Weaknesses
Spells & Sundry
- Healer-
Most proficient with healing magic, Adele is an adept spirit healer with training in the Spirit and Creation schools, with a preference for rejuvenation and anything focused on defensive or preventative measures. Shielding and dispelling enemy enchantments as well as amplifying the power of the mages around her or buffering her allies from spells or damage, disrupting enemy attack and mending everyone after the battle rather than attacking outright is what she prefers. - Enchanter-
She is skilled in ice spells, though these aren't used as often due to her focus on healing. In a pinch she can raise a wall of ice or cause an obscuring blizzard for a hasty retreat. As a mage she's not overly skilled in martial combat but is capable of defending herself from most thugs or the average brigand with her staff. Against a trained warrior? Not so much. She depends more on glyphs and haste to stall them while spamming flee.
Practical Applications
- Surgeon-
Well educated through the White Spire Adele has taken a vested interest in the building blocks of human, elven, and dwarven anatomy in order to make herself a more efficient healer. She's taught herself a handful of surgical techniques, not enough to perform anything more complicated than suturing up a wound but enough to look like she knows what she's doing while covertly mending the injury with magic. It helps her take the guise of a mere surgeon rather than a mage if the environment is hostile for mages. - Herbalist-
Why use magic for an aching head when a potion of poultice will suffice? Adele's studied herbalism and medicinal horticulture extensively to, again, make her a more efficient physician and provide multiple means of treating a body's aches, pains, and lacerations. At any given moment she's experimenting with tonics, tinctures, or poultices to find what has the best effect for what injury. She has some knowledge of what to avoid and a moderate understanding of how to counteract some basic poisons. - Miscellany-
Noble raised and tower educated in Orlais, Adele's got a decent grasp of most of the larger political mechanization as they applied to the White Spire, Chantry law, the schools of magic (in theory), the fade, communicating with spirits, wine and it's creation, and social etiquette.
Cracks in the Ice
- Paranoia & practicality-
Adele is no great warrior nor master of stealth. She's a squishy mage, thoroughly aware of it, and makes do as best she can with the skills she has available. It means running from a fight rather than engaging herself. She's also endured a recent trauma with the events at the White Spire and it's kept her from sleeping well, minding her temper around templars or the Chantry, and distrustful at best and almost irrationally suspicious of them at worst. She won't be winning any real points for diplomacy anytime soon. - Contractual Obligations-
Part of the deal she has made with the Spirit of Compassion that she channels for her healing is to not use her magic to cause bodily harm or kill. Loopholes for the sake of mercy could be made but it's never come up in Adele's experience.
Inventory
- A set of Surgeon's tools (scalpel, sutures, needles, tweezers, etc)
- Healing potions & Poultices, salves, ointments, dried herbs, bandages
- Navarran tome on anatomy and physiology (corpse studies, illustrated)
- Mage's Staff
- A bottle of Orlesian wine
- PTSD
Motivation
A desire to find a peaceful resolution for the challenges mages face and find a safe place for her fellow refugees in Ardoral's Reach. Keeping them safe as they continue their studies and safe from any overzealous templars is a high priority for her. Also: Anywhere with that many warriors will need healers in a time of war, and she is obligated to heal those that have need of her.

Personality Pre: Dragon Age Asunder
When she has her composure she can come off as dismissive and impatient or even apathetic depending upon the situation. She attempts to cut through the bullshit in order to focus more on what needs to be done rather than feelings hurt by curt words. When she loses her composure the full of her temper shows, usually in marked barbs or snapped commentary about the lack of one's skills being a failing of their previous instructors, not her. Under all this there is a compassionate, playful woman who hides away behind layers of professionalism and the weight of expectation. She is skilled, so too must be her students. Setting a high standard means maintaining it, maintaining it is stressful. But with a bit of care an a bit of sarcasm she can manage well enough without losing her mind.
As a healer her bedside manner is somewhat stilted- there are gentle words and soft assurances she's never mastered the art of using, preferring to be blunt about how much this will hurt, how foolish someone was for getting injured in such a fashion, and the likelihood of their survival. She doesn't gentle her speech if someone is acting dense, has little patience for fools and less for those that do. If she is treating a child Adele is patient and forgiving of their fear and foolishness. Despite her harsh demeanor Adele does care for people- she simply does not trust them to be terribly wise concerning their own health. No matter why a patient is in her tent she treats them to the best of her ability. She may curse their idiocy with every poultice and spell but she will fix them. She does her job, she does it well, and if things become more difficult it only makes her all the more certain that it is worth being done.
When not healing or teaching she is far more lax with her speech, thoroughly informal and playful. Easily amused and faintly mischievous, she does not mind stringing along banter back and forth for a long, fair while so long as both parties are keeping up. Her sense of humor is wry and varied, a touch on the dry side and faintly academic. She does on occasion take a great deal of pleasure in listing out every possible outcome of a foolish action in gruesome detail.
People in large groups don't engage her terribly well, she doesn't have the patience for small talk- but individuals she finds fascinating. Charming. Worth engaging and minding and, should they both have the time and are suitably attracted to one another, flirting. The time for dalliances is few and far between but she does make room for them in her life. As a healer she works with her hands and casts with them more than she would with a staff and is incredibly tactile, leaning and reaching out, touching, ruffling hair, casually embracing her peers (those she deems worthy of such affection), and her students (they are children, siblings, friends of a sort, so why not?)
